Replacing the Bad Boards, Not the Whole Floor
Hardwood floor repair and board replacement is for damage that a refinish cannot fix: boards blackened by a slow dishwasher leak, split or cracked boards, deep pet stains, gouges from moving day, or boards lifted by water. The damaged pieces are cut out and new boards of the same species and width are woven in, staggered like the original so the repair does not show as a patch.
Common repairs
- Water damage: cupped or blackened boards near dishwashers, refrigerators with ice makers, sinks, toilets and sliding doors
- Pet stains: dark spots that go deep into the wood and remain after sanding
- Gouges and cracks: heavy furniture dragged, dropped objects, old splits along the grain
- Squeaks and loose boards: movement between the flooring, subfloor and joists
- Gaps: seasonal gaps, or larger permanent gaps from a floor installed too wet
Fix the cause before the floor
Replacing boards over a leak that is still running only buys a few weeks. If water was involved, we check moisture readings in the surrounding boards and subfloor and ask that the source (a supply line, a door threshold, a sprinkler hitting the wall) be fixed first. Cupped boards sometimes flatten as they dry; we wait for readings to settle before deciding what has to come out.
Matching old oak
Many Fremont homes from the 1950s through the 1970s have narrow red or white oak strip flooring. New boards in the same width and species are usually available, though older floors can be slightly different in thickness and need shimming or planing. Color is the harder part: decades of light and finish darken oak. The cleanest result usually comes from replacing boards and then refinishing the whole room so old and new wood get the same stain and finish. If you only want the boards replaced, we stain and finish them to blend as closely as possible and tell you up front how close that is likely to be.
Squeaks and movement
Squeaks come from boards rubbing on each other or on nails as the floor flexes. If there is a crawl space or unfinished basement, we can often fasten the subfloor from below. From above, we use trim-head screws or specialty fasteners driven through the floor and filled. Persistent squeaks across a whole room can point to a subfloor or joist problem, which we would explain before quoting.
Gaps
Narrow gaps that open in late summer and close in the wet season are normal wood movement and usually best left alone. Wide gaps that never close can be filled with wood slivers glued into the gap, or the affected boards can be relaid. Fremont's dry summers and wet winters make some seasonal movement normal, which is why we measure moisture before deciding a gap needs work.

How It Works
1. Find the cause
We look for leaks, check moisture and decide what has to come out.
2. Source matching wood
Same species, width and thickness as your existing boards.
3. Cut out and weave in
Damaged boards removed and new ones staggered into the floor.
4. Finish to blend
Spot finishing or a full-room refinish so the repair disappears.

Hardwood Floor Repair & Board Replacement Questions
Can you replace just a few hardwood boards?
Yes. Damaged boards are cut out and new ones are woven in with staggered joints. The color match is closest when the room is refinished afterward.
Will water-damaged hardwood dry out on its own?
Slightly cupped boards sometimes flatten once the leak is fixed and the floor dries. Blackened, split or delaminated boards do not recover and need replacing.
How do I know if my subfloor is damaged too?
Soft spots, a musty smell and high moisture readings around the damaged area are warning signs. Once the boards are up, we can see and test the subfloor directly.
Does insurance cover hardwood floor water damage?
That depends on your policy and the cause. Sudden leaks are treated differently from long, slow ones. Check with your insurer; we can give you a written, itemized estimate for your claim.
